Odette let out a sharp cry as the doors to the ballroom slammed open and the party was descended into chaos. Pirates flooded the hall, tearing down the decorations. The suitor she had been dancing with abandoned her in the rush of people moving around her, all of them frantically running for exits, for the balcony, for tables to take shelter under. Odette was all but frozen. She looked around for her father, but she couldn’t find him. Her heart was pounding in her chest and she felt sick. Distantly, her body screamed at her to run, but she couldn’t move her legs. Someone grabbed her and she finally screamed, but they covered her head with a burlap sack and flung her over their shoulder like she weighed nothing. She could feel them moving, carrying her somewhere, even as she sobbed and screamed. The ground became unsteady after a while, wooden and swaying. She could hear laughing and singing around her. The person carrying her descended some stairs, opening a door, and finally set her down, holding her arms tight at her side. Her eyes landed on a pirate standing over a map who looked up as they entered. “Let me go,” Odette begged the captain, tears streaming down her face as she weakly struggled against the person holding her- a large man with a handlebar mustache and long hair. “Please, my father will pay any ransom!” A lie, but a necessary one- Odette’s father would only pay a ransom for her brothers. But she refused to die here. She paled as the captain chuckled and cooed at her. They dismissed the man, cupping Odette’s chin, smiling at her as he left, closing the door behind him. “Please.” She begged. “Don’t kill me.” They were alone in the room, which she guessed was the captain’s quarters. The captain just smiled at her.
